Meet Rodney & Jake, two Fabul'hosts from buzzing Austin, Texas! For these two, hosting is more than simply offering guests a place to sleep; it's about offering a safe and quiet place for the LGBTQ+ community. A place where people can feel empowered and free to be themselves, comfortable in their own skin. With the current climate in the US, Rodney & Jake believe platforms like misterb&b are all the more vital for ensuring safety while traveling, and we couldn't agree more! Read this fabulous story by these two Fabul'hosts now.

Why did you become hosts on misterb&b?

When we first became hosts, we were busy running 5 companies and were hardly home. After years of transforming our house into a beautiful relaxing space, We thought, “well, someone should be using it:” Around that time, Texas was also seeing a big influx in anti-lgbtq+ legislation and rhetoric, including stories popping up of queer couples being denied stays on mainstream accommodation platforms. This was our confirmation that we would become misterb&b hosts in order to create a safe, quiet space for the LGBTQ+ community.

What does hosting for the LGBTQ community mean to you?

Everything! Being a safe space in a red state is a must right now for the LGBTQ+ community, and we are happy to be a small part of that. We strongly feel no one should be shamed or pushed aside for who they are, how they look, etc., and we love being that safe space while providing a sparkle of joy through our design! Our goal is to create a space where people feel empowered, free to be themselves, and comfortable in their own skin.

In your opinion, what attracts guests to Austin in particular?

So many things about Austin are the opposite of what most people think of Texas. It has vibrant, lush landscapes, lots of nature and parks, a fun music and arts scene, and great people. You can basically live outdoors for 9-10 months of the year. For years, Austin has had the reputation of being a relaxed, fun-first city. And even as the city has experienced major growth and change, that sentiment still rings true today.

What is your best memory of a guest?

We have made quite a few great memories! We have had several fantastic guests who have turned into friends that we have visited and stayed with across the country! Learning something interesting about a guest you would never expect is always fun. From finding out they had just finished a garment for an upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, to learning they were behind some of our favorite TV shows, and wise words of wisdom, you never know what you will learn from someone! We have also stayed in touch with just about every guest who has stayed with us, and we feel that we have really grown for the better because of it!

Do you feel more involved with the LGBTQ+ community since you started hosting?

Yes! Being involved with misterb&b has also been a great resource for us as hosts to learn about unique LGBTQ+ events in our own city! We also get to learn about LGBTQ+ achievements and challenges across the nation, and worldwide - which has given us the opportunity to become more active within our local community too. It has also given us a new outlook on how great our local community is here in Austin.

Describe your perfect day in Austin

A warm spring or fall day for sure! These are the best types of days in Austin - warm enough to swim in the springs during the day, but cool enough to cozy with a backyard fire in the evenings!

Waking up to head to the lake and spend the morning at Hippy Hollow, our nude beach, then popping back into town for lunch at Guerros for some tacos and doing some shopping up and down South Congress while stopping by Jo’s Coffee to get an iced turbo and a photo in front of the “I Love You So Much” Mural. Ending the day next to a cozy backyard fire with a drink in hand making s’mores!

When is the best time to visit Austin and why?

Spring (mid March - mid May) and fall (Late September- Early November) are best. All of the plants are out in their full glory, lush wildflower blooms and perfect weather to explore all the greenbelts Austin has to offer. It’s warm enough to enjoy the springs but cool enough in the evening to give you a break from the heat!

How has hosting impacted your life?

For the better! Between meeting guests who have become friends, learning more about the LGBTQ+ community, and creating a safe space that has impacted lives even on a small scale, we feel we have become better people for it! Being a host has been so rewarding, and it has also helped shape how we have been transforming our home and remodeling decisions along the way.

What’s the Difference Between Big-Ship LGBT+ Cruise Companies and Brand g?

Big LGBT+ ocean cruises can be a blast – there are tons of hot people to get to know biblically, big, all-night dance parties, and an endless array of activities onboard.

But as we age, those cruises can begin to hold less allure. Maybe you’ve outgrown the “notches in the bedpost” routine, or it’s getting harder to dance all night in your underwear and then get up at 7 am to take an all-day excursion into Rome.

Both experiences—big-ship and small-ship—have incredible things to offer. It really depends on what you’re looking for in a vacation. Brand g has the inside scoop here:

WHAT IS THE BIG-SHIP LGBT+ OCEAN CRUISE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

The Pro’s:

-Tons of people to meet

-Lots of onboard amenities

-Great theme parties

-Great entertainment

-Lots of categories of cabins to choose from

The Con’s:

-You may never run into that great guy you met on day one again

-Lines for everything, from the buffet to the bathroom

-Escaping the crowds can be daunting

-You may hear the music from the deck parties for much of the night

-For those with mobility issues, the amount of walking can be a challenge

-Since big ships can only dock at big ports, there can be long bus rides from the port to the city you’re visiting (this isn’t exclusive to big ships; occasionally, small-ship cruises can also have this issue, but it’s far less common)

WHAT IS THE BRAND g SMALL LUXURY OCEAN CRUISE OR RIVER CRUISE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

The Pro’s:

-The atmosphere/décor/food can be much more luxe

-You can get to know many of the people on your ship, since the number of guests ranges from about 50 for our exotic cruises, like in Asia, India, the Galapagos, etc., to 150 for European river cruises, to 200 for our small-ship ocean cruises, also known as “Superyacht” cruises.

-No lines

-Ships are more easily navigable, since they’re much smaller

-Great entertainment (albeit often in a lounge as opposed to a theatre)

-Less ship movement – if you have issues with seasickness, you’ll virtually never even know you’re sailing on a river cruise

The Con’s:

-Less onboard amenities (many ships offer a small gym and spa, but you won’t get a casino or water park)

-If you’re super shy, it can be harder to get “lost in the crowd” (however, the guests on our trips tend to be extremely friendly and welcoming)

-Fewer categories of rooms. Although our superyacht ocean cruises offer 8-10 categories to choose from, river cruises typically only have three (although all rooms are oceanview or balcony – there are no inside rooms).

-The price is higher, since you don’t have the same scale. A cruise for 4,000 has economy of scale - much more buying power with things like food, and less onboard space per person - so they’re able to offer the product at a lower price.

Note that there are also tour operators that book a group of LGBT+ guests onto a straight cruise. So, you may have 50 gay folk onboard that 4,000 person Celebrity cruise. This is a good compromise for those on a stricter budget, since – outside of a cocktail party or two – the tour operator isn’t offering a full-ship charter or LGBT+ dance parties or entertainers, and thus the price will be cheaper. You won’t get that memorable feeling of freedom and safety that comes with a full-ship charter, but at least you get a guarantee of having a decent amount of LGBT guests on your cruise.

HOW DO THE BIG-SHIP LGBT+ COMPANIES WORK?

Pricing

The big-ship LGBT cruise companies offer their cruises a la carte. This means that the price you pay for the cruise itself is only the beginning. From there, you’ll add in the cost of shore excursions, which can often be as much as the cruise itself. You’ll add the cost of drinks (or a prepaid drink package). You’ll have to book your own airport transfers. You get the picture. The price can still be lower overall, but you do have to budget for all these extras.

Service

They also offer a lower level of service. This isn’t meant to criticize or imply that these companies don’t care about their guests or want to offer more service. Not in the least. It’s just physically impossible to offer a high level of service when you’re dealing with thousands of guests on a single trip.

Changes/Cancellations

These companies typically require you to resell your own cabin if you need to cancel. Once again, since they’re dealing with a massive volume of guests, they have to make certain compromises in terms of service.

HOW DOES BRAND g WORK?

Pricing

Our fares are virtually all-inclusive, except for airfare. We include almost everything, so that from the time you land at the destination airport until you leave, you never have to pull out your wallet. We include shore excursions, adult beverages, airport transfers, pre-cruise hotel nights (where applicable), special Brand g experiences, etc. This results in a higher initial price – particularly because our cruises are luxe and smaller scale – but breaks down to be considerably less so when you consider everything that’s included.

Service

We can proudly say that Brand g’s commitment to an extremely high level of service is unparalleled. Ask any of our guests. We want you to feel taken care of in every possible way. If you encounter a problem during the reservations or planning process or while on the trip, we’re there to solve it.

Changes/Cancellations

Brand g will work with you to resolve any changes or cancellations. While we can’t refund a trip after final payment (we encourage guests taking ANY type of trip, straight or gay, to buy travel insurance), we will attempt to move your payments to another trip of your choice.

As you can see there are amazing positives to both of these types of experiences and tour operators. It all just depends on where you’re at in your travel evolution and what is most important to you!

The Rainbow Dollar Is in Retreat: Why U.S. Destinations Are Trending Downwards This Year

For decades, LGBTQ+ travelers have fueled local economies across the United States. From PRIDE celebrations to destination weddings, our “LGBTQ+ Dollars” have brought billions to cities eager to court queer tourism.

But new intel from our data team suggests that the “Rainbow Dollar” is at risk.

In recent months, bookings on our platform have sharply declined in several U.S. cities once considered rising queer destinations. Among the steepest drops:

Salt Lake City: ↓ 72%

Austin: ↓ 44%

Phoenix: ↓ 33%

Cathedral City (near Palm Springs): ↓ 51%

But the shift isn’t just from the U.S. based LGBTQ community. International travel to the U.S. for PRIDE season also took a hit:

Bookings from Canada: ↓ 66%

Bookings from Europe: ↓ 32%

So, where are LGBTQ+ travelers going instead? Cities in Portugal, Colombia, and Greece saw increased activity. To us, these destinations are seen as safer, more inclusive, and politically stable for queer visitors.

Known for its progressive laws and welcoming cities like Lisbon and Porto, Portugal offers strong legal protections and a vibrant queer culture. With legal same-sex marriage and growing LGBTQ+ visibility in cities like Bogotá and Medellín, Colombia feels increasingly inclusive, and Greece has rapidly expanded LGBTQ+ rights and offers a lively, welcoming scene in Athens and the islands, especially Mykonos.

The reason behind the retreat? Safety and legislation are now going to outweigh sun, parties and nightlife.

The recent shutdown of a national LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline in the United States, combined with a Supreme Court decision allowing healthcare discrimination, signals to many in our community that even historically “friendly” places may no longer be safe havens. Infact, our latest user survey showed that 40% of travelers said they now screen destinations for local LGBTQ+ laws before booking.

The LGBTQ+ community will go where we feel safe and respected. Visibility isn’t enough, and we think that protection under the law matters a great deal too.

This is a wake-up call for U.S. cities that once relied on LGBTQ+ travelers to boost tourism. The Rainbow Dollar doesn’t just show up for parades, it follows policy trends and governance. In fact, research from the Williams Institute at UCLA found that same-sex weddings alone have added $6.8 billion to local economies, with over $2.3 billion in the South.
